Sustainability isn’t just for the giants. On Earth Day, we’re celebrating the meaningful steps small businesses like ours can take to protect the planet, without needing a big budget or a full-time sustainability officer.
Using the B Corp framework to stay accountable
Being B Corp certified means we are formally committed to balancing profit with purpose, and caring for people and the planet is built into how we do business. A big part of the certification focuses on environmental responsibility, but even if you’re not planning on becoming certified, the B Impact Assessment is free to use and can be a really helpful tool to track your progress.
It’s something we’d recommend to any small business. As this year’s Earth Day theme says: “Our Power, Our Planet.” And the B Corp community is a great place to harness that collective power.
Keeping our team up to speed
Over the next 12 to 18 months, new sustainability regulations will come into force across Europe. They’re aimed at larger businesses, those with a turnover of more than €50 million and employing over 250 people, so while they won’t impact us yet, they’re likely to affect some of our clients. So, staying ahead of the curve is really important for us.
In March, we hosted a Lunch & Learn session featuring guest speakers from Terraverde Solutions, who provided a valuable overview of upcoming developments and sparked insightful discussions about ESG challenges in the travel sector. These kinds of sessions help our team stay informed and ready to support our clients as the landscape evolves.
Tracking our impact in a way that works
We keep a close eye on our carbon footprint, even as a hybrid team. Every year, we each log our travel and energy usage into a sustainability tracker. It helps us understand everything from our renewable energy consumption to our recycling habits.
To make it easier (and quicker) for the team, we’ve streamlined the process. For example, we now pull data from our office schedule to calculate travel distances, and we ask everyone to update the tracker quarterly rather than annually. Small changes like this have made a big difference.
We’ve also introduced a £50 incentive to encourage people to switch to renewable energy at home – another small action with long-term impact.
Collaborating with the Travel by B Corp community
We’re proud to be part of Travel by B Corp, a group of over 30 travel companies that believe travel can be a force for good. Through the community, we regularly share ideas, learn from one another and collaborate on ways to drive positive change in the industry.
It’s been a brilliant way to build connections with like-minded businesses and shape a more sustainable travel culture together.
Creating space for ongoing learning
We’re big believers in continuous learning. Internally, we use a dedicated Slack channel and newsletter to share tips, resources and sustainability updates. We also encourage team members to attend relevant training and industry events, including ABTA’s Delivering Sustainable Travel Conference, TTG’s Fairer Travel Sustainability Forum, and Carbon Literacy training tailored for the travel sector.
We hope our efforts inspire other small businesses to take steps, big or small, towards a more sustainable future. Happy Earth Day 2025!
