September’s ATOL, ABTA, and ABTOT bond renewal season might seem a long way off, but for many travel businesses, it’s already a ticking clock. Whether you’re knee-deep in summer sales or just avoiding the admin pile, it’s easy for paperwork to creep up on you. That’s why our sister company (and travel insurance experts) The Travel Vault have shared five top tips to help you get ahead and renew with confidence.
1. Did you know you can use more than one insurer to cover your bond?
In some cases, a single insurer may not be able to give you the full bond that ABTA, the CAA or ABTOT has asked you to provide. But did you know, you can use multiple insurers to get to that amount? As well as giving you the capacity you need, this also helps you spread the risk.
The Travel Vault already works with several vetted insurers and can help you coordinate a multi-insurer solution tailored to your needs.
2. Get in before the stampede
September might seem ages away, but for underwriters, the season is already in full swing, and applications are stacking up fast.
Getting your submission in early gives you more breathing space and a clearer picture of what security you’ll need. This early insight ensures you have plenty of time to arrange the required capacity well before the deadline.
3. You might be eligible for better terms
In light of recent increases in bond capacity, many operators may now qualify for better terms or more favourable conditions. Promptly submitting your renewal documentation allows bond providers to assess your position early, giving you the best chance to renegotiate or improve your bond terms.
4. Your numbers tell a story; make sure it’s the right one
Bond providers rely heavily on up-to-date financial records to assess your business’s stability. So, it’s crucial to keep things accurate, current and clean.
Make sure your management accounts, balance sheet, and cash flow forecasts are up to date. Not only will this build trust with bond providers, but it will also speed up the underwriting process and help avoid delays from follow-up questions.
It’s also a good idea to include a short commentary explaining the assumptions behind your forecasts. That added clarity can go a long way in avoiding delays and giving your underwriter the full picture from the outset.
5. When you get that letter, move fast
Once the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), ABTA, or ABTOT send you their decision letter, pass it to your bond provider immediately.
It’s a key piece of the puzzle: without it, bond quotes can’t be finalised. If you’re working with The Travel Vault, a quick turnaround on this step keeps everything moving and ensures you stay aligned with regulator timelines.
Your bond renewal might not be the highlight of your calendar, but it doesn’t have to be a headache either. With a bit of forward planning (and the right people in your corner), the process can be straightforward, even stress-free.
The Travel Vault specialises in securing competitive bonding solutions from approved insurers. Our expertise in the travel industry means we understand the complexities of renewal season and are here to help make the process as seamless and efficient as possible.
